Subomi Balogun Email and Phone Number
In 2018, at 23, I landed an incredible job: PR for Nigeria's top investment expert (now Africa's foremost). I managed her social media, assisted her personally, and attended high-profile events (e.g, meeting with the US deputy ambassador). It was the dream job for any PR professional—a dream I hadn't even imagined for myself.3 months later, I was fired. Why? I lacked life-skills: promptness, initiative, communication, GRIT. Working with someone as driven as Tomie required these traits, and my slow-growth made me a roadblock. She asked me to continue working remotely but stopped communicating. I guess you could call that being "laid aside." I was back to square one—zero, really. Like in video games where you start powerful, then lose it all and have to build back from scratch. That was me. . After wallowing for a while, I picked myself up. I'd always loved stories and was good at spotting grammatical errors, so in 2019, I pivoted to editing. During the 2020 lockdown, I got an internship with OakBooks, where I honed my editing and proofreading skills. I also volunteered to review books for a Manchester book club, whose high standards further sharpened my writing. My first editing job came that year. A client had hired a fake editor who butchered his book, and I slaved tirelessly to revive it under a tight deadline, and after everything, I got paid ₦2,000 with heartfelt thanks. 😂From there, I built my freelance career, working on diverse projects that developed my versatility. In 2021, I was approached by Digital Focus, a Blockchain solutions company. I led the team that produced two books on the Blockchain ecosystem, which were launched in Kenya and Dubai to great acclaim, teaching the power of collaboration. After some more freelancing, last year, I ventured into direct response marketing, learning to write compelling copy that motivates action. In November, I took over social media management for a struggling marriage counseling brand. Through strategic PR and content creation, I revived their engagement by 80% and boosted conversions to 60%.Looking back, I realize that GOD allowed me to fall so I could grow. Like in those video games, when you rebuild from scratch, you maximize your resources more effectively than when you started with everything. Today, I'm far more than I was meant to be for my first job. I now produce formidable results in:CREATIVE WRITING EDITING AND PROOFREADINGVOICE-OVERSSOCIAL MEDIA MARKETINGWhat's my greatest lesson? It's this: The most important step anyone can take is always THE NEXT ONE.
