After graduating from Utah State University in Family and Consumer Sciences Education and working with kids of all ages at Boys and Girls Club, I was excited to use the skills I had learned in the classroom.Typically the first week of student teaching is observing the permanent teacher. By 7th period my first day in the middle school, I asked the teacher if I could teach the last class. She observed me for 15 minutes and from then on I was teaching.By the end of the week I had taken all of her classes except one. After completing a semester of student teaching, I didn't want to leave. I loved teaching middle school and knew that was my calling in life.Because I graduated in December, I planned on substitute teaching until the end of the school year. Even though I graduated in secondary education, I took as many jobs as I could in elementary school to keep up on my classroom management skills.I loved going from classroom to classroom to see what permanent teachers did. I learned so many things from the teachers I substituted for even though I never met them.In March I got a permanent teaching position (I was interviewed Wednesday, hired Friday, started Monday) at Hillcrest High School in Midvale, UT. While I was at Hillcrest I ran the Child Care Class (taught the high school students how to teach preschool then we ran a four year old preschool all year), Child Development, Adult Roles, and Financial Literacy.After teaching I decided to become the Substitute Teacher Trainer at the Substitute Teaching Division of STEDI.org. I now get to share the skills that I have learned and the successes I have experienced with other substitute teachers.Specialties: Classroom management, teaching strategies, substitute teaching
