My role in this and the subsequent 2nd year interdisciplinary project, Engineering You’re Hired (EYH), was to influence the embedding of employability skills and foster engagement of industry. (funding value 1.5 million Euro).I was responsible for compiling the applications, determining and monitoring the project programmes, directing project activities, management and co-ordination of pan-European academic and industrial partners, financial management and reporting to the European Commission. Project design team leader for the civil and structural design of Corby and Peterborough 350MW combined cycle power stations. Contract value of each station £100 million. My responsibilities included client liaison, management of multi-disciplinary design teams and liaison with the management contractor on procurement strategy. Among my general managerial roles, I organised the development of formal Quality Assurance in the Nottingham office.

My major project was as a Project Manager leading the design of two of the five major halls, forming The International Convention Centre, Birmingham (project value £130m). Project Engineer leading designs for office developments and condition surveys of major buildings. This first experience of working with in-house multidisciplinary teams included the production of building designs including for newspapers in their move from Fleet Street to the Isle of Dogs

A structural engineer gaining detailed design experience in all structural materials, site investigations, preparation of contract documents, production of cost estimates and supervision of contracts on site. During this part of my professional training and development, I gained full chartered engineering status in 1983.
