Sue Devine is an Associate Professor and Academic Head of the Department of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University in Queensland. She began her professional life as a nurse/midwife and progressed into health promotion and public health to fulfil a desire to make a positive difference to the health of under-served populations. Sue has worked in the Higher Education area for over 20 years and her work in leading curriculum development at James Cook University has been instrumental in embedding public health within seven allied health disciplines. Additionally Sue has significant coordination and teaching roles in the Master of Public Health and Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine programs. In 2015 Sue was the overall winner of the JCU Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and in the same year went on to receive a National Office of Learning and Teaching Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning – For championing public health and health promotion in the tropics through authentic and networked leadership that inspires multidisciplinary health professionals. She has a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching. In 2012 she completed a Doctor of Public Health where she examined the role of local government in creating supportive environments for physical activity at a community and workplace level. She also has a strong interest in workforce capacity building in health promotion and health promotion evaluation research.
