Suicide Prevention Coordinator August 2012-PresentSPC is responsible for interpreting policies, directives, regulations, guidelines, information letters, etc., from VA Central Office (VACO), VISN and local facility leadership in order to assure adherence by the Suicide Prevention Program.The Suicide Prevention Coordinator provides public relations and community education regarding the VA, the Suicide Prevention Program and suicide prevention in general, to various social services, medical, mental health, legal, housing and welfare organizations. . The SPC represents the VA and the Psychiatry Division at meetings with community partners and other agencies, and collaborates with these officials to form partnerships and develop alternatives and improvements to the current system of service delivery.Duties include but are not limited to:***Maintains a list of patients determined to be at high-risk for suicide and monitor their care to ensure that enhanced-care services are being delivered by treatment team/clinical providers.Tracking any no-show appointments by these patients and ensuring follow up as soon as possible to ensure safety and facilitate rescheduling the appointment.***Maintaining awareness of suicide prevention treatment options and making recommendations to the patient's provider when new best practices become available.***Consults/collaborates with providers of high-risk patients for purposes of education and facilitating best practice. May optionally provide direct patient care for same purpose.***Facilitates the implementation of Category I Patient Record Flags and completion of Suicide Behavior and Overdose Report, Suicide Safety Plan, and all other required documentation.***Responds to referrals from the national Veterans Crisis Line and reports back to the VCL Staff about the results of interventions when needed.***Submits Behavioral Health Autopsy Program and Family Interview Template for completed suicide.Completes Issue Brief for suicidal behavior as identified in the 10N Guide.***Provides training to clinical and non-clinical staff in the Medical Center, Community Based Outreach Clinics (CBOCs) and community about risk factors, warning signs, treatment options and resources.***Promotes the use of evidence-based practices and strategies for suicide prevention.***Works closely with VA and community resources such as VSOs and other community groups to assure that they are aware of how to recognize Veterans at risk for suicide and their options for getting these Veterans assistance.
