At my core I'm an educator who has been blessed with many great opportunities to learn and grow. My highlight reel is a glimpse into my age but also what I hope you will see as my added strengths.Does anyone remember the Stay In School Initiatives of the '90s? This is where I got my first real job experience and it left a lasting legacy, I learned about literacy and learning and barriers and resiliency. I also trained in Conflict Resolution, Negotiation and Mediation at the Justice Institute of BC and went on to facilitate workshops for educators about peer mediation and the possibilities it added to school environments. From there my desire to explore the world landed me in Japan working first as an assistant language teacher in the K-12 system but later as a corporate language trainer. Almost seven years later with a wider perspective on the world I returned to Canada and Southern Alberta to face what I describe as my greatest culture shock. Here is where I took off my rose-colored glasses and as the wife of an immigrant and the mother of bi-racial children began to own up to the prevalence of racism in my home country. It also grew my awareness of the needs and gaps immigrants face daily. My lived experience allowed me to have a deep understanding of what it is like to not read, write or communicate easily. It also fuelled a desire to do something about it.This move back to Canada also allowed me to continue teaching and learning. I contributed to programming at both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College. The college allowed me to create the 'Youth In Transition' program based on the exemplar set at Bow Valley College. It was my honour to with a team of gifted educators be allowed to meet the needs of 16-29 year old youth who faced a gap in program offerings in Lethbridge. In 2011, I took another leap and entered the world of contract employment. Combining my in depth knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks, the Essential Skills (currently Skills for Success), and Adult Literacy and Learning Principles I have had a very diverse career. My skills include: curriculum and materials development, facilitator training, direct delivery to learners and organizational coaching. I love that not any two days are the same.I am always open to new opportunities.
