If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." - Mark TwainI'm not sure when my passion for rehabbing older adults with medical conditions transitioned to a passion for helping all humans age in good health and with a contented sense of well-being. It must have started early in my career when I worked with residents in nursing homes- back when we restrained and ignored people who were confused, sad, and in pain, which only contributed to their confusion, sadness, and pain. I was old enough to recognize that this sort of neglect and blind acceptance was a deeply rooted institutional (and shameful) construct, but not experienced enough to know what to do about it. Moreover, the mystery of Alzheimer's and other dementias, specifically, got my attention. For five years in this setting, I floundered. Ten years in, I found my footing. Twenty years in, I found a way around. Thirty-plus years in, I found the sweet spot.The thing is, aging well is not rocket science. I believe in proactive aging and the principles of human design- helping people eat, move, think, feel, and live like Good Humans.Currently, I am the Senior Director of Well-Being and Brain Health at Asbury Communities, where we are committed to creating opportunities for older adults to move better, feel better, connect more, and experience more through our EngAge Well Initiative. Central to this is Kinnections Brain Health, a cognitive health assessment and lifestyle intervention program. Rock wall climbing and boxing are optional, challenging the status quo is not.Inspired by older adults who want to maintain their independence, as well as those battling chronic diseases, neurodegenerative changes, and loss of function and mobility, I founded the non-profit SeniorScapes, Inc. Our mission is to build senior-centric, dementia-friendly outdoor spaces that cater to the needs of older humans. We're currently building our first park in Frederick, MD (coming Spring 2025) .I am passionate about driving impactful change in senior care- whether it's through innovative well-being programs, transformational interventions, or creating vibrant spaces that enhance quality of life.
