Sue Thomas, Ph.D., a political scientist, is Senior Research Scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) and Director of PIRE-Santa Cruz, which specializes in the intersection of social science and law as applied to public health policy research. In addition to PIRE projects and publications, she has published several books and dozens of journal articles, books chapters, encyclopedia entries, and book reviews on women, politics, and policy and American government. In 2020, she was the recipient of the Malcolm Jewell Enduring Contribution Book Award from the State Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association for her book How Women Legislate.Before joining PIRE, she was Associate Professor of Government and Director of Women's Studies at Georgetown University. Dr. Thomas has also taught courses on women and politics at University of California, Santa Cruz and served as an Associate Editor and Book Editor of the political science journal Politics & Gender. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a legislative advocate in California on behalf of women's issues.
