About Susan Bickford
I am currently the President of 1,000 Drones for 1,000 Girls a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase young women's access to STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) careers by introducing them to drone technology and mapping. I worked at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve as the Natural Resource Specialist for 21 years. During my time there, I worked to bring drone technology into the Reserve System.Concurrent to working for the Wells Reserve, I spent 21 years in the Air National Guard as a Combat Weather Forecaster which was mostly aviation support missions. I spent a year in the desert learning about forecasting sandstorms, and also learned how to live in challenging times. My bought my first drone in 2011. I was thunderstruck about the possible applications for this in the environmental field and in kids education.In 2012, I attended a program called Entrepreneur Bootcamp for Veterans (EBV) That same year New England UAV, LLC was created to help education people young and old on the joys and responsibilities of flying a drone and in 2016 I got my FAA Remote Pilot certification that allows me to fly commercially.Afterwards, I found my favorite UAS mission of all - getting kids involved with drones. Kids and Drones are a match made in heaven. It thrills me to see the wonder in their eyes when you put a remote control in their hands. Church youth groups, boy scouts, home school kids, career days in middle schools, where there are kids there is fun and learning going on.I grew up in the 60’s and my dad always called me his “woman’s libber”. I was always a boundary pusher. I joined a combat weather team, spent a summer working at the South Pole, got my motorcycle license at age 50, and now am a Remote Pilot. I think the boundaries that I am meant to push have always been my own personal ones. I am very interested in working with promoting women in the drone industry and particularly interested in working with girls in STEM programs. That's why, in the middle of a global pandemic, I created 1,000 Drones for 1,000 Girls. The first event was held in my barn during the first lockdown due to Covid. Four girls and four hours of fun, even though we all had face shields on. Now the focus is turning the project into a full blown nonprofit organization. More learning, more doing, more fun!One of my favorite quotes is from Eleanor Roosevelt: “A woman is like a teabag, you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” Turn up the heat baby, we can take it!

Stewardship Director
Well National Estuarine Research Reserve
Susan Bickford has been the Stewardship Director for the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve in Wells, Maine since May of 1998. Her duties include providing mapping support for Southern Maine conservation and research organizations, providing digital data for area GIS users, training members and volunteers in the use of the mapping software and GPS/mobile units, and mentoring GIS interns, and providing field support for research and stewardship activities. Her role as Stewardship Director includes managing habitat for threatened and endangered species such as the New England Cottontail Rabbit. She manages forest, fields and wetlands habitats and works to control invasive species within them. Susan is also the Safety Officer for the Reserve and oversees the Wells Reserve’s safety program.Susan is graduated with a Master of Science Program at Antioch New England University for Resource Management and Conservation in May 2016. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Environmental Science and Technology from the University of Southern Maine and an Associate of Arts Degree in Biology from Bucks County Community College.Currently Susan is working on integrating Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS aka Drone) technology and soundscape ecology into the National Estuarine Research Reserve system of 28 Reserves. Wells Reserve is one of these national reserves. UAS technology allows high resolution remote sensed images to be obtained with end-user input into when and how often the images are recorded. Soundscape ecology is the study of how the total sounds of a given area affect the living beings using that area. This includes physical sounds (geophony) biological sounds (biophony) and man-made sounds (anthrophony).

Susan was an Assistant Instructor at the University of New Hampshire for the GIS for Community Decision Makers Course and is currently an Adjunct Instructor of GIS at the University of New England. Susan served for twenty-one years in the Air National Guard and attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) She was in charge of a 21 member combat weather forecasting unit that provided weather support to a variety of ground and aviation assets. She served as the Weather Superintendent for northern Iraq in 2005 in support of the 42nd Infantry Division as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
