About Sue Hakes
Sue is a 2014 Bush Foundation Fellow, community volunteer, and former elected official working to build leadership capacity in her rural Minnesota community. She is a 2015 graduate of the Public Affairs Leadership program at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota and Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Courses "Woman and Power" (May 2016) and Leadership in the 21st Century (September 2015). Sue is passionate about strengthening rural leadership, especially for women, and was a charter board member of RAIL--Rural and American Indigenous Leadership. In 2016, Sue worked as Field Organizer on the Hillary Clinton Campaign in Dayton, Ohio. She currently serves on the Board of Growth & Justice and Cook County Higher Education with a focus on DEIA work. Sue was elected as a Commissioner on the Cook County Board on November 2, 2010 after finishing a 2-year term as Mayor of Grand Marais. Sue found her experiences as a Cook County Commissioner and the Grand Marais Mayor to be the most rewarding and the most challenging work of her career. In addition to holding public office, Sue's background includes 13 years at Honeywell, Inc. mostly in Research & Development Business Development. Since moving to Grand Marais, she has enjoyed a successful career as a REALTOR and owner/broker of "Sue Hakes Realty". She enjoys volunteering at all levels for a variety of non-profit organizations in northeastern Minnesota.Sue and her husband, John Gorski, are retired. They enjoy volunteer work, local politics, being outdoors, fishing, art & design, spending time with family & friends, and their beautiful shepherd/husky mix, Laker.
