About Sue Mayhew - Realtor®

It has been an incredible blessing to experience life in two great nations - the majority of that time in Canada and the last 22 years in America. By God's grace I am living in Virginia and working in real estate. By way of education & background I would primarily describe myself as a musician. Playing a piano from the age of two, music has always has been an integral part of my life. The freedom of being able to 'play by ear' makes for endless creativity and easy composition. That creativity also transfers to real estate. What are my objectives? In one word - service. Life is not about getting rich, winning awards or racking up an impressive list of real estate deals. My success in life will be measured by the people whose lives I have touched. A verse in Micah 6 sums up my raison d'être: "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." That, says it all!

Listed skills include Military Relocation, Real Estate, Listings, First Time Home Buyers, and 34 others.

Realtor - Sales Associate

Current

Reston, Virginia

It's exciting to be a part of a company that places its focus on agent growth and development. Real estate is changing and the freedom that United Real Estate offers its agents is a refreshing change from the industry status quo.My remarks, below, from my days at Remax, still stand. One change is reflected in my decision to seek CMRS certification. The Certified Military Residential Specialist designation became my goal after I had worked with several military clients - both active duty and retired. What an honor it was to get to know and work with those who serve and have served the nation. CMRS training strengthened my skills and gave me a greater depth of understanding with regard to the unique needs of our heroes.More than ever I recognize the need for a genuine personal and caring touch with clients. However, there is disagreement within an industry that measures success on the basis of sales stats. Should my clients be treated as I would treat my own family or as principals in a transaction that concludes at closing? My past clients already know how I would answer that question and I've had the pleasure of working with several of them more than once. There is an amazing degree of satisfaction that results from making a positive impact on someone's life...and no better field than real estate to achieve that goal!

Realtor - Licensed In Virginia

Ashburn, Va

Working in real estate as a RE/MAX agent has simply shifted my years of public service in a new direction. Helping people, whether they are buying, renting or selling a home, requires more than just viewing homes, processing documents and shaking hands at closing. Buying a home is a very personal decision and it requires an agent's skill as well as genuine concern for the people involved. Often I'm asked if I consider real estate "rewarding." The short answer is yes, but that reward has less to do with dollars than the wonderful people I'm able to help. Imagine working at a job where no two days are alike, where people from all cultures and walks of life intersect with one common desire - to find a place they can call home! Then, envision being able to facilitate their dream and see the joy it brings them.I'm blessed to have amazing clients and there is nothing more gratifying than knowing that they are safely situated in a home that they love and can comfortably afford. If that's not rewarding, what is?

School Board Member - Ward 8

Hamilton Board Of Education

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Twice elected to office to represent the interests of students and taxpayers in Ward 8 (Hamilton Mountain West). Policy maker, analyst and decision maker. Day to day initiatives involved budget, curriculum, physical plant, legal and negotiation issues for 40,000 students and 11 union groups. Member of numerous in-house committees, as well as liason member with City Hall joint committee. While in office I promoted and supported the use of Phonics/ Decoding as an alternative to the status quo Whole Language approach. As a result, one of the schools in Ward 8 implemented a phoneme-based program and achieved impressive test results that put the majority of students two to three grade levels ahead within six months.Plans to expand a self-paced secondary learning program in Ward 8 were contained when my efforts to quantify the data revealed that, on average, Westmount High students required an extra year of education in order to complete their high school graduation requirements. In addition, efforts to artificially inflate numbers at this school, by importing French immersion students, were halted when board staff revealed that immersion students would also be required to participate in the self-paced learning program - a fact that was kept from parents. As a result of my involvement with new IT initiatives at the committee level, both staff and trustees were linked with an intranet. It was thereafter expanded to faciliate parent-teacher communication.Much of my work involved problem solving and empowering parents outside the system. Working with Psychological Services, local Principals or Area Superintendants, I lobbied on behalf of constitutents and removed systemic barriers intended to protect the system rather than those whom it was supposed to serve. When critical issues could not be resolved or progressive Board members were co-opted by bureaucrats, I met with local parent-teacher groups or media representatives to bring difficult issues to light.

Nov 1991 - Sep 1996

Public Relations Officer

Family Forum

Hamilton, On, Canada

Continuing the work with REAL Women, I held the position of PR officer at Family Forum. Most of my work involved initiatives at the provincial level, but the organization also tackled federal policy and social issues. We also networked with American counterparts and found that Canada was roughly ten years ahead of the U.S. in policy matters.

1989 - 1991 ~2 yrs

National Public Relations Officer - Board Member

R.E.A.L. Women Of Canada

Toronto, Canada Area

This was my first foray into national PR and one that I fully enjoyed. As a board member I was responsible for the organization's quarterly publication and dealing with member issues. On the PR side, my role was largely media-based and there was a good deal of repair work needed to mend previously-damaged fences with print media outlets. On a daily basis I dealt with both electronic and print media interview requests. Along with the president, I was the voice of a 40,000+ member conservative organization that lobbied on a wide range of public policy issues impacting Canadian families.Research, arranging radio and TV interviews for the president, drafting press releases, writing speeches, responding to media and member requests and editing the newsletter were daily tasks. The organization was often in the spotlight because it stood up to its liberal counterparts and made transparent the agenda of those feeding at the public trough.
