About Sue Smith
My first role in fundraising was with Macmillan Cancer Support based at their Sussex office in Hove. Thanks to their comprehensive training regime I soon found the career that I loved. However, I wanted to help people closer to home and sought a role where I could make a difference in the community where I lived. I started work at Turning Tides (previously known as Worthing Churches Homeless Projects in Worthing initially as Community Fundraiser, but was promoted to PR & Fundraising Manager within 12 months and remained there for 13 years. I was responsible for the rebrand working in partnership with the Chief Executive and over the years grew the fundraising income and fundraising team substantially for the charity. I also over saw the volunteering aspect, increasing the number of volunteers from 150 to over 300. In 2018, I moved to Southampton for personal reasons where I started work with Dentaid.I was very lucky to join Dentaid at an early part of their journey as they expanded their reach across the UK. Their 2 mobile units help those most in need in our society today who are unable to access dental treatment. Personally I have suffered severe toothache in the past and it effects your sleep, your mood and your ability to do anything. I felt that if I could help anyone in this situation to feel better my job would be a good one!I joined the charity as Fundraising Manager in September 2019 and was promoted to Development Manager in April 2020.

As the demand for our work increases so do the challenges of how to secure sufficient funding to be able to offer our dental clinics. We are on course to run 500 clinics in 2023. We have expanded our fleet of mobile dental units to 7 plus a trailer. With a target of £1million to raise per year looking at income generation has become integral to our success.

Working to increase the number of clinics we can deliver across the UK helping those who otherwise would struggle to receive dental care. Just imagine being able to help relieve someone of one of the worst ever pains! Since joining the charity I have increased the number of clinics they run each year from 56 in 2019, to 176 in 2021 and we are on target to run 300 in 2022. In 2022 we also won the prestigious Healthcare and medical research Award at the Charity Awards. We won for our work providing outreach dental care for people experiencing homelessness which the judges described as a “life changing service” that was “innovative and inspirational.” Winning this award was a huge honour and an endorsement of all the hard work we’ve put in to setting up regular mobile dental clinics for the most vulnerable people in our society. Not only is it recognition of all we have achieved so far, this accolade will help us to grow and develop so we can reach more people in the future.I very proud that I have personally assisted with the growth of Dentaid and look forward to where we may go in the future.
