I hate to lose more than I love to win. It drives my approach to my work. I used to characterise my career passion as being tax. Wrong. It is working with clients to minimise their tax risks and secure the best outcome in any tax dispute or litigation process. It is an important difference for two key reasons. First, it’s a recognition that when you are embroiled in a tax dispute you need an independent lawyer with expertise in managing tax disputes and litigation to counsel you and support you through the process. Someone who understands evidence, privilege and court processes, and someone skilled in alternative dispute resolution. Second, it means I don’t offer a deep tax technical knowledge that crosses all current tax issues. Rather, I provide a sound understanding of key tax issues to support my tax controversy skills. When I need deep tax technical expertise I work with experts in the specific tax field. It ensures an independent approach and the best prospects of a successful outcome in a timely manner. I have acted for a broad range of clients from some of Australia’s largest corporations through to individuals and not for profits. My work includes all aspects of tax audits and litigation including negotiations, disputes in relation to the collection of tax, production of documents and tax appeals generally. I have significant litigation experience in all Australian judicial forums. However, with 30 years’ experience I understand that most taxpayers don’t want to have to litigate and I work to resolve disputes as efficiently as possible. I’m also actively engaged in elder care as chair of Aged Care Justice and a palliative care volunteer. It is a privilege to help those in need and hopefully drive the change needed to secure better care for our elderly.
