In June, 2001, Professor Basu moved on a five-year tenure with great expectations to Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. With command and skill, he at the suggestion of Dr. A.P.J. Kalam, the Hon’ble President of India piloted the project of drawing up an excellent detailed yet feasible twenty-year perspective plan of growth for a university of the stature and heritage of Visva-Bharati. He catalyzed the turn around of Visva-Bharati with streamlining measures to ensure the University’s adherence to proper rules and regulations and the elements of fairness with which issues were dealt with.. Besides, he has published articles both in Bengali and English on the Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, his thoughts and philosophy and other contemporary topics.

In 1997, when he moved to the National Institute of Management Calcutta set up by the Indian Army, there was practically nothing on ground excepting for a couple of non-academic staff members and a building. He almost single-handedly, built it up into an institution offering both MBA and MCA programmes and within two years, the MBA programme was ranked within the top 60 in the country in a survey undertaken by a renowned news group. Today, the institution has improved its position even better, as is seen through the acceptability of its students by the industry at large. Dr. Basu’s contributions are greatly appreciated there.

He is a statistician of international repute and has contributed extensively to the development of knowledge specially in the area of mathematical statistics. He is well known for his research in probability theory, statistical inference, reliability theory and inventory control. He has published extensively in top national and international journals. His research has taken him to countries like USA, Canada, China, Japan, Taiwan, Iran, Korea and several countries in Europe; he has taught and lectured in seminars and conferences in some of these countries. At the national level, he is/was associated with the Operational Research Society of India, Calcutta Statistical Association, Indian Society for Productivity, Quality and Reliability, Indian Science Congress Association, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur Senate, Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation, National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Indian Statistical Institute Council, Distance Education Council (DEC) of India, India-China Eminent Persons Group etc. in various capacities. He has been a Consultant to the Government on a number of projects and chaired NAAC and DEC Peer Team Meetings.He has edited a number of volumes in statistics and is a Co-Editor of the prestigious Indian journal of statistics SANKHYA.
