I have a wealth of experience working with people with learning disabilities in various care settings including both as an unqualified and a qualified nurse, facilitating inclusion and improving outcomes for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems. During my nursing training, I acquired invaluable knowledge and experience in community nursing as the majority of my placements were based in the community. I had first-hand experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team; facilitating access to mainstream services and improving the health outcomes for people with learning disability through health education and health promotion. I also had experiences working in various settings including the children’s and adolescents and special school settings. Since graduating from university, I have had the opportunity to work as a learning disability staff nurse in a specialist inpatient hospital for people with autism, mental health and learning disabilities. Working with patients with complex and behavioural needs for the past years has given me the opportunity to develop my clinical competence and enabled me to build on my confidence and communication skills. I am capable of communicating effectively with patients, relatives and with all members of the multidisciplinary team involved with patient care.I work well as part of a team and I am also capable of working independently, managing work load and taking initiative. Having the responsibility of co-ordinating shifts and being in charge of a ward has not only boosted my confidence but also improved my interpersonal and leadership skills.I take pride in what I do and strive for the highest standards of care. I am also conscious of my learning and professional development needs and I always strive to achieve specific goals.I believe the skills I have obtained are essential and transferrable to many nursing and health and social care roles and I believe I would be an asset to any team.
