About Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa

I am a passionate storyteller who has a multi-disciplinary creative practice as a producer, writer, filmmaker, theatre-maker, performer, and educator. I am a strong advocate for diversity and the importance of visibility in the performing arts. My work predominantly provokes conversations around identity, feminism, and the power of uncomfortable conversations. Acknowledging that people of colour are leaders and storytellers, I use community-building strategies and art to discuss power, identity, privilege, race and class to create meaningful bonds between people. My work brings the wider community into the struggles and aspirations of migrant communities and increases mutual understanding. Initially gaining national and international acclaim for my performance poetry, I was the WA representative in the Australian Poetry Slam Competition (2014) and a semi-finalist on Australia’s Got Talent (2016). I have been a finalist and recipient of many awards recognising my work, including WA Performing Arts Awards (2020), Western Australian of the Year (2021), Young Australian of the Year (2022), and the Western Australian Multicultural Awards (2022). I am currently leading the creative development of some new works including three television series, two theatre works, a documentary project and my debut single 'Collectables'.
