I have two lives. By day, I am an immigration attorney and the proud principal owner of ImmPowered Law Office, my solo immigration law firm. In my other life, I am Professor of British Literature at Pitzer College, and have been a college educator for 20+ years.I am admitted to practice all areas of law in California, and authorized to practice immigration law nationally. I specialize in family immigration, green cards, naturalization, DACA, student visa issues, and humanitarian visas, such as asylum, Temporary Protected Status, VAWA, U Visas, T Visas, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS).As an immigrant myself, I know immigration can be stressful. I started ImmPowered Law Office, my solo law firm, so I could offer clients personalized, affordable attorney services that help them achieve their immigration dreams. I provide clients with a holistic and personalized assessment of their immigration options. I explain the steps I take on their behalf and why. I keep clients in the loop. Knowledge is power. I aim to take the stress out of the immigration process.As Professor of British Literature, I teach nineteenth-century fiction and poetry written in Britain and the former British Empire. I also teach a British literature survey from Beowulf to Samuel Johnson, and another from the French Revolution to the present. One of my favorite classes to teach is Literature of the Supernatural (19th-Century ghost stories and eerie yarns). I also teach law and literature, Victorian gothic literature, British women writers, and yes, an occasional class on vampires in literature. I have published numerous scholarly essays and book chapters, and presented papers at many national conferences in my specialization. I challenge students to read widely, deeply, and perilously beyond their comfort zones. I urge an "evidence-based approach" to reading literature so that our interpretations arise from the alchemy of the words on the page, context, and our subjectivity. I invite students to apply close reading and narrative skills to read the world as text, and to use language to imagine and forge a better world.
