I have been in the Handicraft Export Industry since 1992. My first 3 jobs were as a Quality Auditor.(Inspector) first as Inspector to Senior Inspector. Learnt to inspect all types of product- Metals, wood, glass, stone & combinations (and later on plastic-PP).As the process interested me, I sat with operators in: welding, brazing, soldering, press-forming, spinning, sand-casting, lathe operation, bending, wood fabrication, kiln operation, metal pre-treatment (phosphate, plating, etc.). Helped form basic understanding of materials, process & limitations. Developed interest in the packaging protection & experimented with hundreds of products using packaging materials such as bubble wrap, PE foam pads, EPS-(thermocol) sheets / wire-cut molds, corrugated cardboard cutouts, hard-angle supports.Performed Drop Tests on all products, furniture etc., experimenting with types of flutes, ply, bursting strengths, Kraft, Semi-kraft, Media board & testing under protocols: ISTA 1A & ISTA 3A & 'modified' ISTA 1B. Got first-hand inputs into how a product should be packed/ constructed.Worked with the Clients Packaging Engineers (2) got some theory & practical principles. After the initial 12 years I took up a job as a Hardgoods Technician in order to provide my employers with additional knowledge to help design more fool-proof product-process & reduce costly quality disasters. Trip to Shenzhen-China, helped see how they operate compared to our factories.During my Factory job stint, I experimented with joinery testing metal-wood-glass joints using different adhesives such as acrylic, epoxy, silicone, hot-melt etc. And tested joint integrity using thermal shock (hot-cold storage, pull tests & vibratory impact tests).I have often been asked/challenged in our industry- "What does a Technician do that a QC cannot?"I have found the answer to this in 3-more questions: 1. It depends on how much interest & aptitude a QC had during his development, to learning techniques of product manufacturing, understanding what caused failures in construction or finishing & the solutions to avoid it.2. Was such a QC a part of the Final Sample-development or Pre-Production Meeting?3. How much time did he get to practice what he learnt - or was he so busy in the rush of inspections / cost saving - that he could not identify a tricky product / process deficiency in time?Finally an observation: "If a factory needs to take ten steps to get everything right , it will take eight!"
