Phd Candidate
Dissertation: The role of sequence elements and protein interactions in focal subcellular localization of Sortase A in Enterococcus faecalis- Identified that sequence elements, individually, play a small role in SrtA localization to distinct foci in E. faecalis.- Identified FtsY and DnaK as protein interacting partners of SrtA. DnaK plays a possible role in localizing SrtA to the septum. This work constitutes the first mechanistic insight into how SrtA localizes to discrete foci in any gram-positive bacterium.
Junior Research Fellow
- Collected clinical carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae to evaluate the CarbaNP test for carbapenemase detection.- Evaluated the prevalence of antibiotic resistance of clinical Helicobacter pylori strains by E-test and its association to infection eradication in patients.
Master'S Thesis Student
Dissertation: Towards understanding the role of novel genes involved in yeast PHO pathway Constructed five deletion strains of genes hypothesized to play a role in the yeast phosphate-signaling (PHO) pathway and analyzed their deletion effect on the PHO pathway by a colorimetric assay measuring the activity of the extracellular phosphatase enzyme.
Research Intern
Project topic: Determination of total urinary protein laboratory reference range for high urine volume- Analyzed data from 1820 patients to determine the correlation between urine volume and total urinary protein.- Established a new reference range for the hospital for healthy patients and nephropathy patients with higher urine output.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
Honor’s project: Isolation and characterization of engine oil degrading microorganisms from Mithi river, Mumbai- Enriched for bacteria that degrade engine oil, a major pollutant of the Mithi river in Mumbai.- Characterized the consortia of isolates with different sources of nitrogen and phosphorus, pH, temperature and engine oil concentrations. We determined growth yield by chloroform extraction.- Growth in urea and ammonium phosphate at pH 7 is ideal for degrading <10% v/v engine oil.
