As a student research assistant under Professor Mark Yim, I am working on the NASA LuSTR TRUSSES project, funded through a grant from NASA to the University of Pennsylvania. (Lunar Surface Technology Research- Temporarily, Robots Unite to Surmount Sandy Entrapments, then Separate)Throughout the 2023-24 school year, I found myself working on the RHex Robot platform sub-team. I collaborated with peers, graduate students, postdocs, and professors in putting together the CAD model for base plates, different leg platforms, mounting structures and beyond, as well as putting together the BoM and more required to manufacture and assemble a 2x scaled RHex robot for testing at NASA offices in California in the future.

During this role, I assisted in the complete design, development, manufacturing, automation, testing, and implementation of new processes and equipment to reduce costs, enhance productivity, and ensure production quality and safety. My position involved collecting and testing chemical samples, performing root cause analysis on products and production issues, and utilizing Solidworks, rapid prototyping, and metalwork to design custom manufacturing upgrades and parts. I oversaw the testing and improvement of these designs by collecting operator feedback on structures I built for production and filling lines. Over the course of the summer, I shadowed and assisted Process Engineers in automating filling lines, gaining knowledge in POC code, PID loops, and wiring complex systems. Additionally, I updated SOPs and provided support to the Associate Process Engineer, Engineering Manager, Maintenance Manager, and others as needed.

As a hostess at Sushi Hall, I provided accurate wait time estimates and updates to guests, collaborated with management to implement strategies for improving guest flow and reducing wait times, as well as collaborated with other individuals to ensure smooth operation and guest satisfaction. Since then, I have also hosted part-time at other institutions such as the Willow Room in Chicago, IL as recently as 2024. I believe that this experience working with people through customer service is integral to developing my soft skills that I will use in my engineering career, and is why I keep returning to roles like these.
