I'm a teacher, researcher, and public historian whose work focuses on the histories of Latine people in the 20th century United States. Currently, I'm an Associate Professor of Chicane/Latine histories at Pomona College (Claremont, CA), where I hold a joint appointment in the History Department and the Intercollegiate Department of Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies of the Claremont Colleges. I previously worked as an Assistant Professor of Chicana/o Studies (2002-2005) in the Division of Human Communications (HCOM), at California State University, Monterey Bay.I am the author of LATINOS AT THE GOLDEN GATE: CREATING COMMUNITY AND IDENTITY IN SAN FRANCISCO (UNC Press, 2013), the first book-length history of Latin American-descent people in the city by the bay. I'm currently writing ON THE EDGE OF THINGS: LATINE AMERICAN AND THE VIETNAM WAR, a book-length history of Latine Americans in relation to the U.S. war in Vietnam, based on scores of oral histories with Latino Vietnam veterans and their familiesI am an experienced oral historian, deeply committed to the work of collecting and preserving the stories of Latine people and finding creative ways to present historical research to a diverse and non-academic public. My oral history work related to Latines and the U.S. war in Vietnam has served as the foundation of two public-facing, research projects: an exhibit titled VOICES VETERANOS: MEXICAN AMERICA AND THE LEGACY OF VIETNAM (spring 2017) and RING OF RED: A BARRIO STORY, a stage play I wrote and produced in 2018. Most recently, I researched, curated, and designed a community-based history exhibit titled SOUNDS OF POMONA: COMING OF AGE IN THE GOLDEN ERA OF MUSIC, 1955-1975 (fall 2023-winter 2024).I served as the President of the Oral History Association (2022-23). I was the inaugural Faculty Coordinator for the Draper Center for Community Partnerships (2009-14), at Pomona College, where I have also served as the chair of the History Department (2014-17); the coordinator for the Chicanx-Latinx Studies Program (2019-23); and a member of the Faculty Executive Committee (2018-20).
