Puerto Rico Inter-Professional (IPE) Service Learning Fellowship and Community Engagement Consortium was created as a response to the immeasurable destruction caused by Hurricane Irma and Maria. As the inaugural cohort, we implemented data collection procedures to conduct a health needs assessment in conjunction with our community partner, Proyecto Enlace; a service-learning curriculum using the pillars of interprofessional education (IPE); and strategize on the development of a long-term and sustainable engagement with vulnerable populations. The IPE core competencies are mutual respect and shared values, understanding the knowledge of own’s role and those of other professions to address patient needs and populations served, interprofessional communication that supports a team approach, and application of relationship-building values to deliver care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable I led our fundraising committee and raised $10,000+ to fund the trip

TUFH began as a World Health Organization initiative to be “The Networks of Networks” connecting Academic Institutions, Health Systems, and Communities to create innovative solutions, capacity building of infrastructures, and informing regional and global policy.I co-authored policy action paper with taskforce chairs on challenges of an aging society using Japan as our model. We explored the current and historical implications of global health policy and the roles of stakeholders (government, private sector, and consumers and advocacy groups) to develop policy action recommendations that consider local social, economic, legal, ethical, and political dimensions. My advisor was Akiko Maeda, a former World Bank Health Economist.

In 2015, in conjunction with the short-term medical mission trips, we initiated a pilot research study to examine the burden of malnutrition in the villages we provided medical services to. As part of our research protocol, we provided a small cohort of children to receive monthly supplements according to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
