From 2010-12, I was an architect at Paypal. I was part of the Risk Management group, and within Paypal Risk, I was responsible for architecture of Paypal Payments Risk systems making synchronous and asynchronous transaction decisions. These Payments Risk systems are amongst the most critical systems within Paypal Risk, carrying revenue risk as well as loss exposure risk. Technology landscape:- 20+ major systemic components- Java, C++, Oracle, Hadoop, Teradata, SAS, ActiveMQ, iLog, Blaze, memcachedMy responsibilities included:- Conceive, design and build high performance scalable infrastructure for synchronous and asynchronous transaction decisions based on historical data, models (regression, neural network) and rules- Drive solution architecture and design to meet business goals (revenue, loss reduction, compliance, user experience, time to market), and architectural goals (performance, scalability, availability, technology standards and roadmaps).- Review and approve solution and technical designs within Payments Risk domain- Bridge between business, product and technology.- Maintain a holistic view of the products and solutions in the organization.- Understand the Risk business and how technology decisions impact the business. - Translate business needs into technology solutions and roadmaps based on deep understanding of the business needs and products.- Lead architecture and design of high impact projects that meet market needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, and reliability, and time to market. - Drive technical designs to consensus and approval as a leader within PayPal’s cross-functional technology team.- Identify, define, create, and apply new architectural design patterns and standards to extremely complex problems.- Represent Risk in external review boards.- Represent Payments Risk architecture in quarterly and annual business planning cycles
