I was brought up as a purchase & supply chain professional. I have been buying and distributing materials for some time at the right cost, right time and right place… well, most of the time… But Purchasing happened by accident, a fortunate one, at TVS Motors. After my mechanical engineering at NIT-K, I wanted to be a designer, well every engineer wants! So allocation to Central Purchase wasn’t sweet. I assumed my engineering skills are thrown down the drain. But in few months I realized purchasing in a manufacturing industry is as much about engineering as it is about purchase. It helped me connect with so many diverse suppliers with all levels of employees and the management, exposed me to a myriad of business problems, and made me a good problem solver and communicator. I am a good listener, can easily see the big picture, conceptualize ideas and also put together a team and implement those ideas… My stint at Manipal Health provided the rare opportunity to build a procurement team and processes from scratch and gave a platform to implement my learning from Automobiles into Healthcare. I was able to build a central procurement organization which is still in the build phase with a number of firsts in a short time:1. created a separate logistics section, a central warehouse for supplies to 9 hospitals across India, and outsourced the logistics function to a 3PL2. outsourced the P2P function to a BPO3. implemented Ariba – P2P and the upstream modules, a first fin APAC for hospitals 4. adopted Lean concepts of 2BIN & VMI in hospitalsAt Manipal, I have been able lay the foundation to transform a transactional purchasing organization into a strategic, data driven and process oriented organization with a vision to be globally best in class in the next three years…Have written a case study of Manipal Experience that has formed the base for a teaching case published by IIM Bangalore published in Harvard Business Publishing
