Park Warden & Biosecurityoffice
I am currently the Park Warden on Ascension Island, primarily looking after Green Mountain National Park. I monitor endangered land crabs, rare sea birds and sometimes green turtles. The majority of my role consists of habitat management, looking after and extending Green Mountains rare cloud forests, home to 2 endemic ferns. I am also a biosecurity officer, ensuring no new invasive species enter our island. I am also a volunteer for land & sea rescue.
Community Engagement Officer
Collaborating with the Natural History Museum and Butterfly Conservation, the Brilliant Butterflies project is currently working with local people restoring a nationally rare habitat, chalk grassland. We are in the process of creating 40 new homes for butterflies and insects across LWT nature reserves, on road verges, in housing estates, on school grounds and in local parks. My role is to engage with community stake holders in Croydon and Bromley to create the new butterfly habitats; lead on ecological ID walks on our nature reserves; invertebrate surveying and data collection; organise and facilitate numerous nature based events for a diverse audience to enjoy; habitat creation and management including volunteer co-ordination; design and deliver nature themed lessons for primary school students; and propagation of chalk grassland specific flora species. The project is pioneering a ground-breaking environmental DNA technology which will enable all partners to learn more about this globally rare habitat, and the wildlife it holds, in order to secure its future conservation.
Conservation Ranger
My conservation and environmental related duties included managing the reserves and employees during public visits; ecological monitoring of birds (both visually and audibly), bats, reptiles and small mammals; assisting BTO bird ringers whilst working towards my C permit, ringing large birds such as little egrets and herons; leading conservation and habitat management corporate work days using chainsaws (certified CS30 & 31), brush cutters, mowers and numerous hand tools; organising, delegating jobs and leading volunteers from diverse backgrounds (including learning difficulties, mental health issues and recovering addicts) during conservation days; principal speaker on nature and heritage walks; habitat management in woodland; wetland; reed bed; scrub and grassland for the benefit of native wild species; invasive species management and clearance including use of pesticides; teaching engaging environmental nature classes with local primary schools teaching all aspects of the importance of green spaces and the protection of native wildlife; creating and working to each reserves management plan and adhering to rigorous health and safety requirements including creating and implementing risk assessments; liaising with stakeholders regarding habitat management plans; practical reserve maintenance including walkways and fences; solely opening and closing the reserves; varying levels of visitor engagement; and monitoring each reserve for any flora or fauna issues.
Terrestrial Research Assistant
Surveying of endemic bird, lemur, reptile and amphibian species monitoring habitat degradation and climate change adaptability. The role of Terrestrial RO required me to study and perfect the identification of 52 bird species (both visually and audibly); latin names of 33 reptile species and 12 amphibian species, all within a 2 week time frame. Three species of lemur were monitored for abundance as part of the study, the diurnal black lemur and two nocturnal species consisting of hawks sportive lemur and Claires mouse lemur. Two pre determined transects for each species were studied within primary, secondary and degraded rainforest with data collected and entered into a database for quarterly statistical analysis. Each transect configuration had to be mastered within a marginal time frame to enable myself to lead teams of global volunteers for daily data collection, during both day and night surveys. Ethogram studies of a specific individual found within a black lemur troop were also undertaken to observe behavioural traits within a group composition. The position also entailed a managerial role of responsibility within a remote camp setting including volunteer coordination and management; mentoring international internship students, assisting in personal project assignments and managing stringent food and essentials budgets. I also composed lesson concepts and taught local tour guides all species.
