Susan R. Carroll, PhD founded Words & Numbers Research, Inc., a market research and evaluation firm in 1984. She has designed and executed hundreds of customer satisfaction surveys, employee surveys, image/brand assessments, needs assessments, program evaluations, marketing audits and new service/product tests. Clients include corporations, hospitals, foundations, banks, insurance companies, schools and colleges, utility companies, housing developers, professional associations and state and federal agencies among others. The firm provides external evaluation services to National Science Foundation, the US Department of Education and other grant funded projects.Dr. Carroll has written numerous articles in professional and trade journals. She is co-author of Marketing 101: How Smart Schools Get and Keep Community Support (3rd. edition), Statistics Made Simple for School Leaders (3rd. edition) and in 2023 Simplifying Statistics for Graduate Students. In 2004 she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UCONN. Trustee experience includes the Torrington Savings Bank (Audit, Compensation, Executive Search, and Scholarship committees), Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, and the Torrington Library. She has served as a Board member of the Chamber of Commerce of Northwest CT, the Brooker Memorial, the UCONN Allied Health Advisory, the Seitz Corporation, the Litchfield County Women's Network, the Northwest YMCA, the Workman Home, and the Torrington Club.In 1993 Dr. Carroll founded Daughters Day, a program for 8th grade girls to build their self-esteem. Susan and David Carroll established a UCONN endowment in 2001 called the David and Susan Carroll Scholarship for Students from Litchfield County (with preference given to students from Torrington).
