Susan F. Ely, MD, MPHTMDr. Ely is currently an emeritus senior medical examiner and the former Forensic Pathology Fellowship Training Program Director for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York (OCME), which maintains one of the larger forensic pathology fellowship training programs in the United States. She is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine and an Associate Medical Examiner for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the State of Connecticut. She is board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. Prior to becoming the NYC fellowship program director, Dr. Ely served as Deputy Chief Medical Examiner for Bronx County. She received her Medical Doctor and Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine degrees in 1991 at Tulane University and completed internships in pediatrics and internal medicine, followed by a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and a forensic pathology fellowship, the latter at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, under the mentorship of Dr. Charles S. Hirsch. She is a peer reviewer for forensic pathology journals, a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the National Association of Medical Examiners, and an appointed member of the Forensic Pathology Test Development and Advisory Committee for the American Board of Pathology. She is published in forensic and clinical journals and textbooks, has extensive experience in expert testimony, and has lectured on forensic topics for varied audiences both in the United States and abroad.
