I started my career in the US Naval Reserves as a Hospital Corpsman. My success as the top student in my class urged me to go into the medical field. Unfortunately, military training does not translate well into civilian status. I was stubborn, and refused to go back to school to relearn everything I already knew (I was only 19). I spent the next nineteen years working at S.P.I.N., Inc. For six years, I worked directly with people with intellectual disabilities who had been institutionalized. We helped people assimilate into their communities. It was challenging and rewarding. I learned humility and compassion. I also developed strong advocacy skills.I fulfilled other roles in the agency as I gained experience and confidence. I was an employment specialist for another six years, obtaining employment and providing training for people on my caseload. I spent the remaining seven years in the Finance department doing payroll, then advanced to Accounts Payable Supervisor. I thought I wanted to be an accountant. I obtained my Associate of Business Management at Pierce College, and started an Accounting program online. After a few courses, I realized that I was not on the right track. I decided to go back to my original plan and go into the medical field. I obtained my BSN at Rutgers University, Camden. Before I graduated, I secured a job at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in the Emergency Department. Over the next thirteen years, I graduated from a baby nurse to a trauma nurse, a triage nurse, a preceptor, and a team leader. I also served as a Decon team leader and was a member of our bioresponse team.During our low volume, I volunteered to outsource to the Vascular Access Service. Learning a new sill enticed me. I decided to join the VAS team full time. I gained more in depth experience with peripheral and central access. I placed Ultrasound guided PIVs, and was on track to learn PICC line insertion when COVID hit. Again, I volunteered to outsource and worked with the bioresponse team to provide guidance to our medical teams. I served as a PPE monitor for many of my shifts. At this time, I am looking for the next step in my career. Work/ Life balance is extremely important, but I want to be challenged. My strengths include providing highly skilled nursing care, working in a team, and forming relationships. I especially enjoy educating patients and families. I want to contribute to my community and make a difference.
