I'm an Independent Journalist based in Cairo, Paris and Chicago reporting features on culture, tourism and the environment. As the former Senior Correspondent for International at Conde Nast Traveler magazine from 2005 until 2013 and as a Contributing Writer for Bloomberg Pursuits Magazine from 2013-14, I covered the African safari industry and contributed hotel, restaurant and spa reviews from around the world as well as long features from destinations as varied as Qatar, Myanmar, Mexico, and many locations in the United States; in addition to producing print articles, I was one of the early daily providers of original content blogs at www.cntraveler.com. I've investigated gorilla conservation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, threats to the African lion population, the resurgence of elephant ivory poaching in Kenya, and the environmental and cultural challenges created by Ethiopia’s plan to dam the Omo River. In the Middle East I've examined the aspirations of the new generation in Tunisia, Egypt, and Syria, and interviewed Arab leaders including King Mohammed VI of Morocco and King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan. From 1987 through 1995 I was a freelance news journalist based in Johannesburg covering the end of apartheid for Newsday, ABC Radio News and others.
