About Susan Joyce

Dr Susan Joyce (H index=46) graduated with a B.Sc (joint hons) from Maynooth University in Biology & Mathematics and a research PhD in host-microbe interactions. Awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to examine cis & trans acting factors affecting mRNA synthesis and gene expression at the Ecole Normal Superieure, Paris which included a stint at the Max Planck Institute, Berlin. Before UCC, she was a postdoctoral scientist at Trinity College Dublin & at Univerity of Bath, UK, focusing on microbe-host interactions. Susan is Faculty at UCC, a PI in the UCC Food Institute & an investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland. Her research interests revolve around microbial & human metabolism and interaction, host & microbial metabolic pathways, that can influence health and disease. She leads a metabolomics focused research group in diverse areas of host response through small molecule analysis (MS applications), cellular systems, gene expression and signalling, clinical interphase, microbial associations (strain isolation, molecular functions & characterization) including their metabolites & genetics. Areas currently under investigation include (1)metabolomic approach to identify novel biomarkers of microbial & dietary influences (2)metabolomic signatures in deciphering health & ageing (3)specific microbial enzyme inhibition & applications to alter metabolomic signatures towards healthy weight gain. Susan is a recipient of DAFM funding. She is a partner in the FP7 project SOPHIA, with a focus on obesity. She represents her School & APC Microbiome Ire in the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) CABALA for health, where she is a partner. She has published over 110 publications (>77 on orcid) including publications in leading journals Ange Wat chimie. 2xPNAS, GUT, J Hepatol and Nature Comms. She regularly serves as a reviewer for national & international grant awards (AMR, HF, EU, Institute Pasteur in-house awards) & for international journals & she is serving as an associate editor Frontiers in Nutrition and editorial Board of Liver research. She is actively involved in undergraduate teaching delivering a range of lectures in genetics & in advanced metabolism at all BSc levels & to Medical students. She is vice-chair of the Irish Mass Spectrometry Society (IMSS) & actively supports EDI and WiSTEM activities. She was nominated for the Presidents Award for Excellence in Teaching (2022-23) & is a proud recipient of a government of Ireland Award IRC Ally award for mentorship in 2022 and has directed 8 research PhD students and 2 research MRes students to completion.
