About Susan Kano

I am a published author and an experienced manager with a 20-year history in publishing, currently focused on reading skill development for grades K-5 that fosters a love of reading. In 1985, I founded Amity Publishing Co. to publish my first book, MAKING PEACE WITH FOOD. After four print runs and four profitable years, I licensed the title to HarperCollins. The book is still in print and has been translated and published in three countries. From 1999–2005, I managed publishing and operations for Lexia Learning Systems, an educational software and reading curriculum publisher. While at Lexia, I managed the development of a mainstream reading curriculum and the overhaul of a special ed reading curriculum. I also kept Operations running smoothly as we grew from a very small organization to a mid-sized company with annual revenue of roughly 10 million. From 2009–2011, I managed publishing for The Writers’ Express (which became a division of Wireless Generation). My team developed teacher guides and student workbooks for grades 3–8 that produced strong writing skills in classrooms. From 2012–2015, I managed the development of digital ELA curriculum content for grades 6–8 for Amplify Education. The resulting daily lessons for students and instructional guides for teachers have produced improved outcomes in reading and writing. Now my focus has circled back to elementary reading skill development. One of the problems common to elementary readers is that they are either boring or include too many difficult words for the intended readers. I invented and patented the Treasure Hunt Book in order to overcome both problems, and to create a fun reading experience that requires students to comprehend and draw inferences from the text — just to get to the next page. I have developed, field tested and published a series of these leveled readers.
