Susan Madrid has expertise in designing microbial cell factories towards high level production of homologous and heterologous proteins and in optimizing the expression of difficult to express proteins (membrane proteins, intracellular proteins, and proteins containing co-factors heme, FAD, copper). She has experience building production strains for different applications. She is inventor on 28 patents and patent applications and author of approximately 21 scientific publications on fundamental research related to optimization of gene expression, gene regulation, and protein secretion.Hands on experience in different molecular biology and protein expression techniques such as gene cloning, DNA assembly, construction of expression vectors and gene disruption/replacement vectors, genome editing using crispr-cas9, transformation and protein overexpression in both fungal and bacterial systems, construction of codon optimized synthetic gene libraries for lead discovery, in vitro transcription and translation (cell free expression), optimization of enzyme activities by protein engineering, enzyme assay development and screening, classical strain mutagenesis and selection.
