About Susan Silbermann

Many years ago, I was introduced to the oft-credited-to-Hemingway 6-word story. It is the ultimate challenge: can you write an entire story in just six words? Distill what you are thinking and paint the picture for your reader in such a short space? I decided to give myself this challenge when re-crafting my "About" section here on LinkedIn. Global CitizenPerpetual StudentInspiring LeaderI was raised to see the world from many angles. As the daughter of an immigrant who fled his country as a refugee from hate, I grew up in a home that prized education, curiosity and inclusion. I was raised in a household of two parents who worked full time outside the home, instilling in me from an early age a strong desire to succeed, with a healthy dose of resilience and self-sufficiency at the same time. I read voraciously from a young age, and developed a clear curiosity about how things worked--and then a resulting desire to explain that to others as best I could. Fast forward to who I am today: someone who is insatiably curious, always looking to learn and share that knowledge with others. I realized early on that the energy it took to be anyone but myself was wasted; as Oscar Wilde said so well, "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Professionally I have spent decades in corporate America with opportunities that my 18-year-old “I-wanna-be-a- veterinarian-and-maybe-travel-the-world-and-speak-French-too” self couldn’t imagine. I learned so much about science, medicine, R&D, manufacturing and global health, coupled with leadership, diversity and inclusion and talent development. I have launched dozens of brands around the world; seen through countless licensing deals and made innumerable presentations to government officials, CEOs, Boards and the external world. I have practiced resilience in a crisis, compassion in a disaster and decisiveness in a business development deal. Looking back now on all these events, I can see the path that I traveled to become an inspiring leader: first of projects and programs but then--with great joy and passion--of people. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a person develop, reach for and succeed in their next position. After all, when the products fade and the crisis ends, it is the people we impact that are the lasting impression we leave on the world. I expect my next chapter will be filled with learning and teaching too: many questions to ask, new puzzles to solve and above all, interesting people to meet, support and inspire along the way.

Listed skills include Pharmaceutical Industry, Leadership, Management, Strategic Planning, and 5 others.
