Overseeing Bloomberg's Dallas bureau with a focus on aerospace, defense, manufacturing, railroads, private space exploration and FedEx/UPS, as well as energy and general political and economic regional news. Editor and occasional writer.

As Texas chief I oversaw a 7-state region including the Houston, Dallas and Denver bureaus where I was responsible for the WSJ's national coverage of big-box retail (Wal-Mart, Home Depot) and airlines (American, Southwest, Continental), global energy, and general economic news. I helped promote the integration of WSJ with Dow Jones Newswires in Texas, and was one of the editors responsible for the WSJ's sustainable energy blog. As a reporter I covered energy, real estate and regional economics, and developed a particular fondness for the A-hed -- the middle-column P1 story dedicated to the most unusual and interesting stories. One of those columns led to my book, Backyard Giants, Bloomsbury USA, 2007.

Reporter and weekend editor covering the usual array of city news, from cops to schools to city hall. I evolved into a national and international reporter for the paper back when media companies had money to burn: my world was plane crashes, earthquakes, government summits and prison riots, political campaigns and conventions. I spent a year in the Middle East, based in Jerusalem, covering the 1991 Persian Gulf War and its aftermath, including the plight of the Kurdish refugees in Northern Iraq and Turkey, the Palestinian peace process, and the release of the Western hostages from Lebanon. In my last couple years at the Chronicle, I split my time between reporting and working as an editor on weekends.

While working full-time at the Houston Chronicle, freelanced feature articles on Texas and regional news to various newspapers' national desks, including the Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore Sun and Boston Globe.
