About Susan Fine Edm

It all began at age eleven when I started to take care of kids in my neighborhood. From there I built a successful childcare business, became a camp counselor and program director, and started teaching English and history at 22. Throughout these endeavors, I brought an entrepreneurial spirit and branched into designing and facilitating parties, working for caterers (I have been to a lot of bar mitzvahs), and setting records for boxes of Camp Fire Girl candy sold. I loved work from the beginning and relished the authentic responsibility provided and the creativity and project planning required. Many years later I remain an educator who has now worked in schools as well as an ed start up and a global education consortium. In these settings, I have held myriad and varied teaching and leadership positions, yet at the center of my efforts: driving learning, whether that's with adults or secondary school students, online or in person. I have spent years coaching and supporting adults and building collaborative teams, and I get what's needed to care for, coach, support, and motivate my peers. A lifelong learner, I remain as curious and committed now as I was when I started teaching, right out of college. I am devoted to the learner experience and aim to ensure that all educator efforts serve learners and prioritize learning. That sounds illogical -- what else would such efforts prioritize -- yet there are many educational experiences that don't lead to observable learning data.Because the research and my own experience show that the most influential factor in learning is the teacher, I am dedicated to helping teachers thrive and do their best work. Further, I aim to ensure that learning in any setting is authentic, deep, and transferable. I have extensive experience designing for learners of all ages and in varied settings, whether in-person, online, or hybrid and always begin by assessing the project, identifying sought outcomes, and getting clear on the problems in need of solutions. Finally, I am dedicated to ensuring every day and in large and small and varied ways that I contribute to making the world more accessible, equitable, and inclusive.

Decades of teaching and education leadership enable me to provide coaching and counsel on curriculum design, online learning, competency-based learning, project-based learning, team building, leveraging a learning management system, recruiting and hiring, grading for equity, accreditation reports, data driven decision making, and professional learning rooted in adult learning theories. Further, I am skilled in gathering relevant information from multiple stakeholders to diagnose needs, identify opportunities in programs, teams, and organizations, and build approaches that lead to employee well-being, growth, and success.Recently I conducted an audit of a PK-12 health and wellness program that culminated in helping build a set of skills and outcomes, differentiated by division, to serve as an anchor for the program's overall scope and sequence and to articulate what students will come to know and be able to do.

I am proud of the work we did at GOA, where we thrived during the enormous growth that took place in the organization's first decade. Moving the student program to competency-based learning was one of the largest and most satisfying projects I have undertaken and enabled a critical focus on the demanding work of articulating what learning looks like, the competencies developed through it, and the outcomes we can assess in student work that reveal the condition of students' evolving competencies. Further, we tackled essential work on grading for equity, which our CBL approach and data made possible. While supporting a faculty of 90+ teachers, I designed and led onboarding and ongoing professional learning and training and built a team of ten peer coaches, who supported our teachers through instructional coaching.Areas of expertise: competency-based learning; actionable feedback; evaluation; instructional coaching; curriculum and professional learning design (with commitment to inclusivity and equity); project-based learning; team building; using varied sources of data to design and assess programs; grading for equity; employee health and well-being.
  • Global Online Academy
    Instructional Designer
Global Online Academy Mar 2014 - May 2018
In this role I supported a cohort of teachers who were charged with designing and facilitating fully online courses for high school students, which took place in Canvas LMS. I worked closely with my fellow instructional designers to move the program to competency-based learning, which included designing classes that built core competencies (habits and approaches to work and learning) and discipline-specific ones. We also continually determined which tools were the ideal ones to support the program and enable optimal student learning, and we built the systems, training, and professional learning needed to support a program that was growing exponentially yet promised a relational approach, where all learners are known.
