  • Cardiff University
Innovation And Engagement Officer (Earth Sciences)
    Cardiff University Aug 2008 - May 2010
I was the Innovation and Engagement Officer for the School of Earth & Ocean Sciences, Cardiff University. This academic department undertakes teaching and research. I worked with all levels of staff who cover the whole spectrum of Earth Science. In my time, I created stronger working links with secondary school teachers, students and academics and developed innovative ways of delivering cross - curriculum linked activities which interested both secondary students and teachers. I had two papers accepted at the International Science Education Conference in Singapore 2009. I have also delivered teachers’ CPD to science teachers in Queensland, which was based upon the work I carried at both SETPOINT Somerset and SETPOINT Wales.
  • Somerset Education Business Partnership
    Setpoint Manager
Somerset Education Business Partnership Apr 2007 - Aug 2008
The establishment of SETPOINTs throughout the UK was a central government initiative to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics [STEM] to school pupils of all ages to increase the numbers of pupils who choose these subjects whilst in fulltime education, and possibly choose a STEM based career. This role within Somerset Education Business Partnership delivered the SETPOINT contract. The main objectives of this contract were to deliver STEM based workshops in secondary schools and to recruit people from STEM based industries to act as role models within the school system. Both objectives lead to an overall aim of encouraging secondary school pupils to choose STEM based careers. As Somerset’s main industry is engineering I worked closely with AgustaWestland, The Fleet Air Arm Museum, AimHigher, Yeovil College, and Haynes Museum to promote engineering to schools to provide the best possible work force for local industries. I also delivered to secondary schools the Greenpower Challenge, and have worked with Rod Cannon at the Royal Bath & West Imagineering event for the last four years. Since leaving SETPOINT I have worked on this event as a volunteer and have already volunteered for 2010. The reason for me leaving the SETPOINT organisation was that the contract was moving from delivery to a more brokerage role, Cardiff University offered me the chance to continue curriculum development and delivery.
  • Setpoint Wales
    Ambassador Coordinator
    Setpoint Wales Jul 2004 - Mar 2006
This again was a newly awarded contract; my initial role was to co-ordinate the recruitment of role models for the Science & Engineering Ambassadors scheme. This scheme also involved me having the responsibility of co-ordinating the volunteers CRB disclosure applications. However, as SETPOINT increased its school delivery programme my role slowly changed to one of workshop developer, deliverer and National Science Week organiser. During this time, I was fortunate to be involved in being part of a team that won a British Council contract to deliver a robotics workshop to over 30,000 school students and general public in 12 countries in Europe, Asia and South America. This link with the British Council led to our team being contracted to deliver activities for the European Space Agency's Summer School. I was involved in the negotiations between SETNET (at that time) and the GE Foundation which resulted in the largest ever grant given by the Foundation outside of the US. The total value was around £250,000 and was aimed at getting underrepresented groups into engineering.
