I am delighted to have been appointed as Associate Director of Medical Education at East Kent. The role is a job share and I will be working three days a week in the trust.

I am currently working as Educationalist and Project Director for Health Education England. Primarily I work on the Technology Enhanced Learning Programme but I am on secondment to the Building a Digital Ready Workforce Programme and lead on the digital literacy workstream. This is a national programme looking to support the development and enhancement of digital capabilities in health and care staff to ensure that technology can be properly exploited to provide better care for all. Exploring the many exciting ideas, initiatives and innovations across the country, we look for the scaleable and sustainable and work in partnership to support what works.During the last half of 2016, I was seconded to work on the development of a curriculum for a brand new role in health and care, the Nursing Associate. Responsible for leading the writing of all curriculum framework documentation, I worked with a clinical team and key stakeholders in helping shape the parameters of practice and key learning outcomes for this new role. The final Curriculum Framework document, from which all national programmes are devised, was completed by the end of 2016.From November 2012 to November 2013, I worked as Programme Director and Adviser on Health Education England's 'Broadening the Foundation Programme' work stream. This work culminated in a written report which I co-authored, for Health Education England and the regional Local Education and Training Boards, containing recommendations and guidance regarding foundation doctors undertaking community and integrated placements. I directed the overall project management of the activities of the three clinical groups, with representation of all key medical education stakeholders, involved and was one of the key authors of the report. The work also involved me undertaking focus group work and interviews with doctors across the UK as we built case studies on current and potential practice around foundation programme placements.

My responsibilities included:- leading a full scale review of the current BSc and MSc and work based curricula spanning 30 specialisms,-writing curricula at all academic levels to help ensure that the healthcare science profession is trained to provide high quality, patient-centred care recognising the opportunities for research and innovation.My work was at the interface between education and the health service with a requirement to see that education and training programmes meet the needs of the NHS. Working with the Chief Scientific Officer of the UK and the Modernising Scientific Careers team, I worked in collaboration with colleagues across the system including members of the healthcare science profession, patients and lay people, professional bodies, the National School of Healthcare Science, the Academy for Healthcare Science, Medical Royal Colleges and other key stakeholders across the health and social care system. During a fixed term post, I co-authored the national strategic framework for Accredited Scientific Practice and headed the team delivering a revised generic professional curriculum for the Practitioner Training Programme.

I currently undertake ad hoc work as a consultant education and training adviser, working mostly in the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. I project managed the trust's pilot for HEE - Better Training Better Care in 2012-13- one of only 16 pilots selected across the country. The pilot saw significant improvements in patient care and outcomes at weekends and was rolled out across the Trust.Another aspect of my work saw me working as part of a leadership and management team which is responsible for rolling out the new medical leadership and management competency framework within the Trust. I also led on an exciting initiative which has seen the Medical Education Directorate developing its own online learning and information community. I have also facilitated in-house training for different teams within the Trust tailoring activities to the specific requirements of directorates.I have also undertaken work for King's College London, facilitating workshops for their medical students on feedback and reflection.

This was the same position as the Health Education Kent, Sussex and Surrey one described here also. I was seconded to work in the Education Department at HEKSS by the University of London and then seconded again to East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust which is where most of my work was based.

Employed by the University of London/Health Education Kent,Sussex and Surrey,I worked 3 days a week as an Education Adviser in East Kent. My overall remit was to work within the Medical Education Directorate to improve the quality of teaching and learning that goes on in the Trust with regard to medical students and training doctors. This work included helping consultants attain qualified status as teachers and as educational supervisors.I also worked with training doctors in developing their clinical teaching skills in both classroom and clinical settings.Within East Kent, I initiated a project to develop social learning using Web 2.0 technologies in the Trust. I also successfully initiated an innovative project, MedStart4U,which encourages medical students and training doctors to develop their teaching and facilitation skills working with school students who are interested in a career in medicine.Part of the strategic and operational management groups, I was involved in the directorate's activities across undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. I project managed a national pilot in the Trust under the sponsorship of Health Education England which is already demonstrating significantly improved patient outcomes at weekends.Achievements:-Project management of a successful national Better Training Better Care pilot for Health Education England that is in the process of being rolled out across East Kent.-Initiation and consolidation of a unique local teaching evaluation programme for training doctors.-Creation and consolidation of the MedStart4U and MedStart Plus programmes for school students which crate opportunities for leadership and the development of teaching skills in medical students and training doctors.-Annual presentation of research and innovative work at international Association of Medical Educators Europe conferences since 2009.Workshops/presentations at AMEE Ottawa conferences - Kuala Lumpur, 2012 and Ottawa, 2014

I worked for 5 years as a freelance educator on the Lessons From Auschwitz Projects. The Holocaust Education Trust has approximately 17 projects a year which see places being offered to 6th formers from every school and college in the country. A place means participation in an orientation seminar, a day in Poland visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau and a follow-up seminar day where students plan how they will disseminate their experience in their schools/colleges and communities. As an educator I worked with these young people at each stage of the project. I generally participated in 3 projects a year.I also undertook outreach work in schools and colleges undertaking and facilitating teaching sessions and workshops on the holocaust.

As Director of the LLASS I was responsible for the overall planning, organisation and delivery of a summer school programme of liberal arts modules held at the university each year. A relatively new venture, my tenure saw the numbers of international students recruited to the school increase rapidly with a concomitant increase in the number of modules taught. Rapidly becoming a significant income generator for the university, LLASS demanded a high level of strategic planning for the future and I was involved in working closely with academic colleagues, university administrators, HR and Finance. Alongside the academic programme, I developed and oversaw the induction, pastoral and social programmes which were significant in providing the support needed by young adults studying abroad in an unfamiiar metropolis.
