Painting is a wonderful excuse to spend time with the creatures and environments that fascinate me. In mid-coast Maine, I will spend hours watching the Damariscotta River, wondering how the tide, current and wind create the wave patterns, or staring into the tanks at the Fisherman's Co-op, marveling at how stunningly beautiful a crustacean can be. Painting enables me to dwell in a state of intense focus, and as a science educator, I find that painting is an act of discovery. Recently, I've been depicting animal species from new perspectives, and increasingly using abstraction, negative space or reflection to encourage my viewers to pause and look along with me.

My programs enabled Harvard undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty to work with K-12 audiences. I supported the development of novel curricula and provided settings in which Harvard students developed teaching and professional skills. We collaborated with community partners to meet educational need and tap into the content expertise of graduate students and faculty, the creative energy of undergraduate students, and the Harvard community's commitment to service.My M.Ed student interns from Harvard's Graduate School of Education, provide instructional leadership to undergraduates in our Teaching and Mentoring program. I enjoy watching the personal and professional transformations that occur as my interns become teacher-leaders and my undergraduates realize that teaching well is a complex act and worthy of their energy and focus.I work closely with STEM PhD students selected to lead our High School Lab Pathway program for underserved high school students. Our goal is to enable teens who like science but who lack context about STEM careers to develop confidence and a sense of belonging as they encounter unfamiliar laboratory tools and environments. These high school students are then placed in paid, summer laboratory internship in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.At the Harvard Ed Portal, my colleagues and I offer programs to inspire lifelong learning for all ages and across disciplines: from interdisciplinary explorations of writing, art, science, and coding for children, to digital literacy and in-depth explorations in STEM for high school students, and career and workforce training for young adults, our mission is to serve the educators, families, children and teens in our surrounding Boston and Cambridge communities.

Created programs which enabled Harvard undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty to work with K-12 audiences to develop teaching and professional communication skills at the Harvard Ed Portal (see above). Developed avenues through which Harvard STEM PhD students learned to teach and practiced science communication by engaging in outreach programming (see above).Oversaw Life Sciences Outreach Faculty Lecture Series to offer insights into current STEM research to high school teachers, and on-campus laboratory classroom experiences for high school classes.

Harvard Ed Portal: Supervise undergraduates as they work with Allston/Brighton children and teens in the Mentoring Program at the Harvard Ed Portal. Oversee individualized, educational programming that purposefully blurs academic lines between writing, math, science, the arts, computer technology and interdisciplinary projects for 1st through 12th grade levels in an afterschool setting. Provide undergraduates with support in pedagogy, classroom management, relationship building, and development as better educators.Life Sciences Outreach: Develop and deploy programs that utilize Harvard’s resources and faculty to further pre-college life sciences education. Oversee professional development programs for a diverse array of New England high school biology teachers and their students. Work with Harvard Faculty, post-doctoral candidates and graduate students to create enriching and engaging teacher PD and classroom experiences on campus, on-site in high schools and at the Harvard Ed Portal.

Utilized Harvard's significant science resources to found and develop professional development and classroom program that furthered high school biology education and supported classroom biology teachers. (Please see above) Oversaw production of teacher-authored educational animations, videotaped faculty lectures for teachers and additional online educational resources.

Develop and lead workshops for graduate students engaged in middle school and high school classroom STEM outreach. Design K-12 curricula, teach undergraduate workshops in content and pedagogy, and direct K-12 STEM after school STEM education initiatives, including our High School Lab Pathway program for Boston Public high school students. Wrote, revised and supervised the delivery of numerous biology laboratory protocols to high school classes visiting the Harvard Biology Teaching Laboratories through Life Sciences Outreach. High school biology teacher at Newton South High School (1993-1998) and Belmont High School (2006-2007). Taught all levels of classroom biology from basic college preparatory through Advanced Placement and worked with students of diverse needs. AP Biology tutor. Co-teacher of "Our Whole Lives," a progressive and in-depth curriculum on healthy relationships and sexual education for 8th graders. Educational consultant on middle school and high school life sciences scope and sequence at Newton Country Day School. Environmental educator at Mass Audubon.

Associate producer for The Secret of Life, an eight-hour public television series on molecular biology and genetics that aired in 1993 in the United States and United Kingdom. Researched content, interviewed scientists and wrote story proposals for producers and narratives for lay audiences. In charge of all aspects of production logistics in the field, including hiring/managing crew, overseeing travel and equipment, securing locations and facilities, and supporting talent.

Worked with producers of Scientific American FRONTIERS, a PBS science series for secondary and middle school students. Researched content, interviewed scientists and wrote story proposals for producers and narratives for lay audiences. In charge of all aspects of production logistics in the field, including hiring/managing crew, overseeing travel and equipment, securing locations and facilities, and supporting talent.

Prepared National Geographic documentaries for distribution and provided administrative assistance to the promotion and marketing department.
