I am a scientist. This shapes my thinking and my approach to progress. That’s why, as the inaugural Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I had the privilege to use my research background to study and implement best practices to improving quality across our seven-hospital system. Then as the Executive Director of University Hospital, the flagship hospital of the Ohio State University, I had the opportunity to really shape healthcare with the true north metric of patient centric care. The new hospital that is half way completed is hopefully a testament to that.In January 2020, I moved back to Canada and I assumed the role of CEO of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and Royal College International. What a privilege to lead these organization through the pandemic and beyond. Together we charted a course to improve education for all specialists with the lens of inclusion and belonging. I am grateful to have served for 3 glorious years. I am now back in the USA at Beth Israel Lahey Health as the President of Lahey Hospital Medical Center, otherwise known as the Lahey Clinic. We are providing extraordinary care at Lahey to patients where they want it most; closer to them. In an incredibly turbulent time in healthcare, it’s vital that the health and healing of patients remains the primary focus. I come from one of the more highly regulated, rigorous fields of medicine—transplant and cardiac surgery. I enjoy working with my colleagues to apply this same level of rigor to standardizing processes across the healthcare system, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
