Toronto

The Toronto Enterprise Fund is a partnership of three levels of government and the United Way that supports businesses with a mission to provide employment to people who are homeless or highly marginalized. In this position, I worked with my colleagues at the Toronto Enterprise Fund to raise awareness of social purpose enterprise as a strategy for creating meaningful employment to people who are socially marginalized by designing, delivering introductory sessions, developing online materials, responding to requests for information, and making public presentations. We expanded the diversity of organizations funded by the Toronto Enterprise Fund by working with many different types of social enterprises ranging from groups of immigrant women starting craft cooperatives to large charities starting businesses. My team provided ongoing support to social enterprises funded by the Toronto Enterprise Fund, facilitated information sharing among the enterprises and helped the social enterprises explore partnerships with the business communityI was a member of the Executive Committee of the Social Business Community-University Research Alliance research project led by the University of Toronto.

Brandon, Manitoba

As a research affiliate to the Rural Development Institute at Brandon University, I collaborated with other researchers to write a case study of a community-based internet company in Churchill, Manitoba and conducted a study of information communication technologies that could be used by national and provincial networks. I worked with my colleagues at the Rural Development Institute facilitate models for community collaboration in rural Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Canadian Community Investment Network Coop was a national network of credit unions, community loan funds and coop funds. As a consultant, I conducted a feasibility study and business plan for the network and facilitated the formation of a steering committee to guide the start up of the network. As the founding executive director, I developed organizational policies, programs and a three year strategic plan.Working with the board of directors, I built a bilingual brand and profile for the national network, developed policy recommendations and liaised with federal government departments to improve the regulatory environment for community investment in Canada, delivered member services, and built a diversified funding base for the network including corporate sponsors, government contracts and membership fees. I also organized CCINC's first annual Annual General Meeting and worked with a national steering committee to hold the first National CSR and Community Investment Forum for 145 participants in 2006 in Winnipeg.

I coordinated a community loan fund located in the east end neighbourhood of Toronto. The community loan fund, now known as the ACCESS Community Capital Fund, gives out small business loans to people who can not access financing from a mainstream financial institution. I was responsible for finding new investments for the fund, assisting borrowers to develop their business plans and loan applications and coordinating the volunteer loan review committee.
