Core skill: immunoassay development. Recently devised a new generic approach to overcome complex matrix interference with biomarker detection and circumventing some limitations with platform sensitivity and the need for a calibrant diluent for immunoassays: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17823-yDevise, perform, optimise and validate novel immunoassays for biomarkers indicative of responsiveness to training in elite athletes (collaborating with UK Sport, English Institute of Sport, British Olympic Association and a Newcastle-based SME, OJ-Bio). Present findings at regular consortium meetings. Conceive IP and work closely with IP counsel.Train, delegate and supervise work as a line manager. Pro-active in staff development of objectives discussed during performance review process.Coach and mentor team members on scientific writing and networking skills, and offer a company-wide training course on effective experimental planning. Managed daily delivery of work on a multi-disciplinary £900k Biomarkers project under the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) Chemical and Biological Measurements (CBM) programme. Lead protein biochemistry input to biomarker detection studies on two collaborative multi-disciplinary cell-based projects, utilising my skills in protein biochemistry, cell biology and my good working knowledge of mass spectrometry. Outputs include two first author peer reviewer publications, two technical briefs for the Analytical Methods Committee, and an invitation as a podium speaker at an international conference.

Provided external technical and financial project monitoring on behalf of the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) for a Biomarkers consortium focussing on the identification and validation of predicative drug toxicity biomarkers, (utilising mass spectrometry, histopathology, clinical chemistry, RT-PCR, microarrays and bioinformatics).

Under the DIUS Measurements for Innovations (MFI) programme, completed an outward 6-month part-time industrial secondment to an SME to disseminate metrology to boost the UK Biotech industry. The work addressed experimental design, data processing and instrument performance characteristics using SELDI-MS for protein biomarker detection. Collaborated with two Cambridgeshire-based SMEs, investigating critical measurement issues associated with the transfer of existing uniplexed ELISA technology to multiplexed 3D bead-based microarrays for the detection of autoimmune diseases. I created and optimised microarray protocols, and produced best practice guidelines. Work was peer-reviewed published as a first author in two journals, and presented at two conferences as an invited speaker.Directed research work for two genomic-based projects that entailed the detection of microbial populations (for a large Pharmaceutical company) and GM foods (for the Food Standards Agency). Outputs include a first author peer-reviewed publication.

Research Scientist to design and synthesise novel recombinant MHC technology to supersede existing MHC tetramers that the company produced and sold for use in measuring peptide-mediated T-cell immune responses. This research utilised a broad range of protein biochemistry and molecular biology techniques including PCR, large-scale bacterial expression, FPLC and ion-exchange chromatography, SDS-PAGE, Western blot analysis, and ELISA. This work has led to a patent in force, entitled “Chimeric MHC Protein and Oligomer thereof” (application no. GB0219459.5).
