I am an internationally recognised expert in radiochemistry and neutron activation analysis. Before co-founding Viridian Consultants, I was Director of Research at the Imperial College Reactor Centre where I was Head of the UK’s only neutron activation analysis facility. In addition to my academic activities as Professor of Radiochemistry, I was instrumental in the design and build of the in-core irradiation systems in the Consort reactor My current role includes project management, and providing technical expertise in radioactivity and radioanalysis.

I supervised PhD students, including some working within industry, and published of over 100 scientific papers plus books and contributions to other's works. As Director of the MSc in Environmental Diagnosis, I placed students in research projects with companies in the nuclear sector such as EDF, Magnox, AWE and Sellafield. With Kym Jarvis we operated the EMPOWER scheme to find placements in the nuclear sector for MSc students from any UK university - an initiative supported the then Nuclear Inspectorate, to feed the nuclear skills pipeline.

Director Of Analytical Services, Imperial College Reactor CentreImperial College London Oct 1984 - Oct 2005Silwood ParkI was responsible for the only neutron activation analysis service in the UK, providing state of the art solutions to analytical problems to industry. This included installing pneumatic irradiation facilities in the Imperial College Research Reactor, and a totally automated delayed neutron analysis system that processed 12,000 bioassay samples per annum. Work for the nuclear sector included developing radiochemical procedures for measuring chlorine in reactor steels and iodine-129 in environmental samples. I developed the dual-energy density meter in a patented subsea multiphase flow device for the oil and gas industry.
