A lifelong environmental activist, I've focused full-time on climate change work for the past 6 years, taking advantage of my background in behavioral psychology and environmental engineering. I do academic and non-academic work, paid and pro bono: writing, talks, advocacy, organizing, community projects, you name it. I am now affiliated with Western Michigan University, and I continue my connection with the nonprofit Root Solutions. We at Root Solutions recently put out a 500-page interdisciplinary guidebook, Making Shift Happen: Designing for Successful Environmental Behavior Change that's getting a great response. I co-founded my local Climate Action Coalition in California, and now am active with the Kalamazoo Climate Crisis Coalition and the university's Climate Change Working Group. I also serve on a climate change panel for the wonderful Tools of Change website, and on the board of the nonprofit Green Driving America, whose vehicle idling programs I have helped to implement.Using what we know about behavioral science is critical. After years as an academic, I wrote an award-winning book for the public about learning principles, The Science of Consequences (www.scienceofconsequences.com), integrating learning principles with biology, behavioral economics, and other sciences to show the full range of applications. Reinforcement principles are essential for sustainable behavior change.
