Synthesis of thermoelectric nanowires.KEY SKILLED GAINED:Material synthesis, thin film fabrication, material characterisation, electrical characterisation, project management, time management.MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS:• Conducted an extensive literature search and helped my supervisor prepare a grant application for research on a new piezoelectric material which could act as an alternative to the commonly used, but toxic, lead based piezoelectric materials. The proposal was successful in attracting a one-million-dollar grant.• Applied various doping techniques to fabricate lead-free piezoelectric materials in thin film form which substantially enhanced the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of lead-free thin films. These thin films have potential to replace the most used, but toxic, lead based piezoelectric materials for use in sensors, actuators, and transducers. The project resulted in 5 first author publications.• A morphotropic phase boundary, which plays an important role in lead-based piezoelectric ceramics was discovered in lead-free Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–Bi0.5K0.5TiO3–BaTiO3 compositions.
