As a veteran public servant, I have an extensive portfolio of career highlights spanning more than 30 years of dedicated experience in criminal justice and law enforcement; public policy and advocacy; and intergovernmental and legislative affairs for Miami-Dade County in South Florida, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S.For more than a decade, I oversaw the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Intergovernmental Affairs on the federal, state, and local levels, by advising MDPD Command Staff and local officials of critical legislation that was key to advancing and/or impacted the County’s and state law enforcement practices. I am a keen strategist whose skill and acumen helped raise the profile of the Miami-Dade Police Department to be highly sought out for law enforcement policy issues and best practices. I have authored extensive pieces of local legislation on a wide range of law enforcement subjects and been responsible for helping to secure more than $65 million in federal, state, and private funding for law enforcement programs.I am a twice-elected Past President of the League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County. Under my tenure, our League received top recognition from its national and state sister organizations. As President, from 2016-18, I doubled the membership base, expanded the League’s partnerships with respected organizations, and strengthened its platform for successful programming, branding, and digital promotion. I created a legacy of new, improved initiatives including strong relationships with local media, an electronic record platform for improved administration, and the creation of the Ruth Shack Leadership Fund to support the sustainability of the League through leadership development. I had the vision to create and secure funding for the local League’s 2018 Election Team for mid-term elections, resulting in increased member participation to “Get Out the Vote,” impacting voter turnout in vulnerable communities, and a Fellows Program to engage young voters.
