Dr. Mitra is a visionary leader with a distinguished academic career spanning three continents (Asia, Europe and North America) as an administrator, a researcher and an entrepreneur. He has made a significant impact on society by successfully merging fundamental knowledge of fluid transport in micro/nano-scale systems with applications in energy, environment and bio-systems.Throughout his academic career, Dr. Mitra has organized and led multi-disciplinary research teams consisting of established and early-career researchers and diverse stakeholders, including industry partners, municipalities and non-governmental agencies.Dr. Mitra has always maintained an active research program by supervising over 100 Ph.D. and M.Sc. graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, and undergraduates. His research findings are disseminated through more than 370 peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings (with an h-index of 48), over 200 invited talks, and over 100 media coverages, and he has raised over $22M in external research funding. In recognition of Dr. Mitra’s impactful contributions to science and engineering, he has been elected as a Fellow of a number of key professional organizations including the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the American Physical Society (APS), the Electrochemical Society (ECS), the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE Foreign Fellow), National Academy of Sciences India (NASI Foreign Fellow), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).Known for his ability to be a bridge-builder by bringing individuals from diverse disciplines and backgrounds to work on common goals and purposes, Dr. Mitra has an entrepreneurial mind evident through the successful creation of six start-up companies and co-founding Engage North to connect with Canada’s Indigenous community.
