I have had the honour and privilege of supporting children and young people with learning disabilities, life limiting health conditions, PMLD, challenging behaviour and autism, in a range of social care (respite and residential) and education settings (schools, PRUs and sixth forms / colleges). Working alongside families and adopting a child / young person - centred approach has been a significant part of this work history too. I have a Level 4 qualification in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People), a Level 6 in Career Guidance and Development and I have recently achieved a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification. I have a young daughter and older step children (one of whom has Autism and Dyspraxia). I like to swim, cycle and run and completed an Ironman triathlon in 2017. I believe in the utmost importance of living in a world that is fair for all and have volunteered at the ‘Superhero Series’ the UK exclusive disability sports series, whose mission is to ‘create inclusive, mass-participation sports events where people with disabilities don’t have to worry about cut-off times or any of the usual equipment restrictions’.Having battled mental health difficulties myself (I have bipolar disorder) I am passionate about the benefits of sport and physical activity for positive, mental wellbeing. As part of this, I co ordinated a year of fundraising at my running club, for 'Sport in Mind', a charity that uses physical activity to help people who are experiencing mental health problems. We raised over £27,000 for this very special cause and I have continued my involvement with the charity in a variety of ways.In 2022, after several big life changes, I experienced a decline in my mental health and became sectioned with psychosis. Having made a good recovery, I am now volunteering on the psychiatric ward where I spent approximately 4 months, as an Activity Assistant, helping to facilitate a pampering session for the female patients. I hope to provide an emphatic ear; using my lived experience to instil hope in their own recovery journey. I would like to gain employment in the field of mental health, either in a clinical role or through linking my passion for physical activity and the positive impact it has on mental wellbeing. Alternatively to continue in the world of caring for children and young people with disabilities and life limiting conditions.
