Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is a nonprofit R&D organization engaging in applied research and technical services. Since 1973 ITRI has played a vital role in transforming Taiwan’s economy from a labor-intensive industry to a high-tech industry. Numerous well-known, high-tech companies in Taiwan, such as leaders in the semiconductor industry TSMC and UMC, can trace their origins to ITRI.ITRI has a focus on six research fields from Material science to Mechanical Systems. The Asia New Zealand scholarship provided me the opportunity to work within the Biomedical and Medical Devices team. My role encompassed the following; Accurate and precise analytical testing. Scientific literature reviews in preparation for FDA approval. Collaboration and co-ordination of resources. The opportunity to represent New Zealand and gain exposure to an extensive R&D environment in Asia.

Tradition and innovation are the trademarks of The University of Rostock’s almost 600-year history. The University of Rostock has excellent interdisciplinary research fields in the areas of natural and technological sciences, medicine and life sciences. I was awarded with the NZ-EU Joint Mobility scholarship which provided me the opportunity to undertake a research project in Germany for 4 months. The project investigated a method of creating a non-invasive blood glucose sensor with the underlying concepts used in pulse oximeters. See the "Projects" section below for more detail.

Our flagship processed products include: high-purity polymeric collagen and preserved pericardium. These premium products are used by tier 1 medical and dental manufacturing companies throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and South Korea. I was fortunate to establish a connection with Southern Lights Biomaterials in my final year at university which turned into a collaboration to produce my honours thesis. With a well refined process already in place my project was aimed at developing optimization strategies to further refine the process; more details can be found below in the “Projects” section.

My roles were diverse as they spanned the university breaks over a few years (2008-2012). In these roles I developed a spectrum of laboratory techniques (from PCR to ELISA) and two scientific publications.
