In the last decade, a vast majority of the companies to swiftly reach a billion dollar valuation have been in tech. As we look at exponential progress curves towards the future, we realize that there exists an ever increasing need for developers, management, sales and strategists specializing in newer niches. New industries are being created as the tools available to us achieve more for less time and money. Market evolves rapidly and hence, companies have ditched 5-year plans to focus on the other side of the spectrum: projects, sprints, scrums.Comparatively, this industry is even more high risk, high reward for entrepreneurs. Why? Because generally, winner takes all. At most, there are 2-3 competing firms in a specific niche. Tech giants have successfully devised ways to break Adam Smith's famous invisible hand which supposedly brings equilibrium to a market. You can simply open a café in a quiet area and capture the traffic in the vicinity. But in tech, the battleground is the cloud, and even that has been captured by Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Provide additional marginal utility and your intended target demographic won't even budge because that additional feature can easily be adopted by the competitors. A new venture must provide ten times value and break the status quo to dominate the market. It is why I look at the first iPhone unveiling in 2007 as the most legendary product reveal of all time, presented with exquisite taste for flair.My heroes are the likes of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, true geniuses at envisioning futuristic products and coupling it with unorthodox marketing strategies to shake the world over and over. Simply building a software isn't entrepreneurship. They say that the best musician in the world is somewhere out there broke. The industry is a 5 dimensional chess and one hell of a ride.
