In the 2 months of summer internship, individually developed an end-to-end data analytics system which extracts data from a proprietary CLI(for a legacy VCS), shows different useful statistics and insights in the form of web interface with tables, charts and graphs. These metrics include project activity, individual commit details, users, rankings, file changes, correlations between files etc.Broadly, the system included 4 components:▪Python Scheduler (Runs cli commands in terminal, records their output, extract data from these logs, applies transformations and saves them to database for further use)▪Django Backend▪MySQL database▪React FrontendSome noteworthy features include:▪Database optimisations: Use of indexing and database denormalisations wherever necessary allowed fast load times for end user. Improved query performance by factor of 10x as compared to initial prototype.▪Reduction of redundant calculations: Heavy and repetitive calculations are performed by Python Scheduler. The results of these calculations are cached in database for it to be used by Django Backend.▪Parallel processing: Python Scheduler incorporated worker thread-model for parallel processing of tasks such as data aggregation from cli. Also allowed to configure degree of multithreading depending on the deployment environment and load supported by legacy VCS. ▪Secure API’s: Avoided use of raw queries as much as possible. Where they had to be, proper sanitisation techniques were used to prevent SQL injections.▪User Experience: Included multiple UX improvement techniques such as use of: skeletons instead of loaders, animations, Interactive graphs such as D3’s force-directed graph for visualising correlation. Filters and toggles allowed for better customisations for users.▪Easy Maintenance: Allowed system maintainer to customise settings such as which projects to keep track of, which usernames to hide from rankings(eg. bot usernames), with the help of customised django admin site.
